Have you ever wondered why God said ” Fear not” many times, in the bible? It is because God perfectly understands the activities of the Amygdala. He knows that the Amygdala affects people’s functioning, whenever it is activated.
Your Amygdala is the part of your brain, that answers the door when fear, worry, confusion etc., knock. It is the gatekeeper that responds to stress and tension. Whenever these visitors successfully activate your Amygdala, a part of your brain, that helps you with critical thinking and making good decisions, which is called “Prefrontal Cortex” is blocked.
Once your Prefrontal Cortex is blocked, as a result of escalating emotions ( Fear, anxiety, worry, etc.), blood and nutrients will not be able to flow into your Prefrontal Cortex. At this time, self-defense mechanisms are activated, reasons shuts down, reality checks fly out the window, irrationality steps in, temporary insanity may kicks in, and in conclusion, you may not hear God when he speaks, nor your friends, when the red flags are shown. This is exactly when you need the intervention of either a professional or responsible others.
Lets take a look at a king in the bible. King Hezekiah, received the news, that his enemies were coming to destroy his kingdom. He became afraid and worried, even after praying and fasting. It was a prayer in fear, his Amygdala was activated already, he ripped his cloth and was depressed, he could not immediately make an informed decision, which made him call for a professional intercessor . King Hezekiah couldn’t clearly hear from God at this time, because critical thinking has been suspended and the Amygdala was in charge. God had to speak to king Hezekiah through a prophet. It was recorded that Hezekiah prayed, he still did not hear God directly and God had to speak through a prophet. How many times has God had to send someone to tell you “thus says the Lord”? and you think, why didn’t God tell me directly?. Well, God knows your mental state and he still has to pass information to you. In order to constantly hear God Speak, our Amygdala must be put under control..
